Seasonal Changes: How to Sustain Mental Wellness in the Darker Days
As we transition into a new season and adjust our clocks for Daylight Saving Time, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on how these changes can affect our mental well-being. For many, the shift in seasons and the clock can bring challenges. As a mental wellness therapist, I’d like to share insights on navigating these seasonal shifts with self-compassion and resilience.
Seasonal Changes & Mental Wellness:
One of the most significant impacts of seasonal changes is the phenomenon known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The onset of SAD typically occurs during the fall and winter months when daylight hours are shorter. Symptoms can include:
- Low energy
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Difficulty concentrating
- Increased irritability
If you begin to notice any of these impacting you, here are some things you may try to sustain mental wellness:
Light Therapy: both artificial and natural sunlight have many benefits to mood and energy.
Physical Activity: outdoor activities, and routine exercise.
Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: these can improve emotional resilience.
Healthy Eating: a balanced diet helps improve mood balance.
Social Connection: planning and / or attending get-togethers, big or small, helps us feel connected.
Seasonal Activities: attend or get involved with events in the community.
Sleep Hygiene: consistent sleep scheduled help regulate our internal clock and improve quality of sleep.
Therapy and Counselling: connecting with a professional can help foster positive self-regulation, improve relationship with self and others, and allow you to feel heard and validated.
As we navigate the ebb and flow of seasonal changes and the clock adjustments of Daylight Saving Time, it’s important to remain mindful of our mental wellness. By acknowledging the challenges and embracing the beauty of each season, we can foster resilience and a greater sense of well-being. Let’s take this opportunity to connect with ourselves, our loved ones, and the world around us as we move forward through the seasons together.
