What is Social Work, Psychotherapy, Counselling and Coaching?

I thought I'd take a moment and outline the practices of social work, psychotherapy, counselling and coaching. First, all of the above aim to support and nurture mental wellness. Though all can be practiced within one session, there are a few marked differences in their definition and application (see below).

When you engage in any of the above types of therapy, you are opting to embark on a therapeutic journey. All are talk-based therapy intended to help you learn more about your own thoughts and feelings and how you navigate the world, and the connections and relationships you have within it. Most often, people seek support when they have thoughts, feelings, moods and / or behaviours that are adversely affecting their day to day lives, relationships and ability to enjoy life to it's fullest. Sometimes, we rely on others in our close circle to tell us we are not our usual self, as it's difficult to notice changes within ourselves.

In establishing a therapeutic connection with a therapist, personality, trust and safety are paramount. Opening up about internal dialogue, thoughts and feelings you may have kept inside for a long time, and never disclosed aloud to anyone can be scary and daunting, therefore having a professional therapist that you feel you can connect with, that you trust, and that is non-judgemental is most important. This is less of a "taught" aspect for a therapist and more of a personal experience feature - think of the age old "when you know, you know". This is why, many therapists begin with a free no obligation consultation where you can get to know one another before commiting to an initial session. It's important to note that you may change therapists at any time - fit is so important, and part of our mandate is to help you find someone that is the right fit, if that person isn't us.

Danielle McFadden, M.S.W., RSW (Registered Social Worker / Psychotherapist) - Midland, Ontario

As a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist, I am trained to use various forms of evidence-based counselling methods and a coach approach. I see the benefit of a holistic and eclectic approach as no two people or situations are the same. Having a diverse background and an ability to work with all ages, stages and with couples and families helps me maintain neutrality and allows me to grow as a practitioner committed to enhancing my knowledge base. With a practice based in Midland, Ontario, I meet people in the office, and virtually across Ontario.

Social Work: Social Workers collaborate with their clients to address challenges through a process of assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation. Registered social workers have specialized university education and must participate in continued professional learning and skills development to fulfill the requirements of their professional regulatory body, the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

Psychotherapy: The use of psychological methods, particularly when based on regular personal interaction, to assist a person to overcome challenging thoughts and feelings, increase joy and overcome challenges with relationships, communication and day to day life.

Counselling: A form of "talk therapy" - a process where an individual, couple of family meet with a trained professional, that is confidential and non-judgemental, to talk about issues or problems that they are facing in their lives, and work on goals co-developed.
Coaching: A partnership between a coach and a client, that assists the client to achieve their personal best and to produce the results they want in their personal and professional lives.
